Battle of the titans

PUTRAJAYA: Only the mightiest will reign champion and take the coveted titled of the World's Strongest Man 2015, held here for the second time in Malaysia.

It was first established in 1977 with titans around the world pitting their strength to be strongest. Malaysia had played host for the world event the first time in 2002.

A total of 30 titans from around the world will be divided into five heats of six competitors competing in the loading race barrels, deadlift, circus barbells, kettlebell throw, truck pull, squat lift, Norse hammers, Basque circle and dumbbell press events.

From the heats, the strongest two from each group will qualify for the finals, where top 10 competitors will test their strength in the super yoke, deadlift, truck pull, power stairs, log lift for max weight and atlas stones events to come out as the strongest.

The heats will take place at Palace of Justice, Putrajaya Marina and the Walking Bridge.

Preliminary heats will take place from April 19 to 22 while the finals, which are opened to public, will be happening from April 25 to 26 at the Palace of Justice.

The 2014 winner Zydrunas Savickas or Big Z from Lithuania is set to defend his title for the fifth time against the likes of Julius Hafthor Bjronsson from Icelander, Eddie Hall from Britain and Brian Shaw from the United States.

Putrajaya Corporation president Tan Sri Dr Ased Che Mat said that they were happy to receive and play host to the world class competition in the administrative capital.

"We're honoured to have the organiser of the World's Strongest Man 2015, who had choosen Putrajaya as the venue host. The event will be broadcast to more than 400 million viewers worldwide.

"Putrajaya is the best venue to have such an event with its 40 per cent parks, lakes and wetlands as well as spacious roads, pedestrian walks and scenic views that provides the best landscape for an event of this calibre," he said at the press conference today.

The event is endorsed by the Federal Territories Ministry and Putrajaya Corporation, as well as supported by Tourism Malaysia.
