Two acquitted of cheating case

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court freed a businessman and a housewife of nine counts of cheating five victims out of RM143,890 via bounced cheques.

Judge Abdul Rashid Daud today ruled that the defence succeeded in raising reasonable doubt in the prosecution's case against C. Yoganandha Moorthy, 41, and Mercy Sumathi Christie, 46.

Yoganandha and Sumathi were alleged to have cheated Wong Yoke Wan, 56, Tew Soo Guan, 34, Kong Shyang Kun, 34, and Chan Kin Wai, 36, by giving them bounced cheques totalling RM93,250.

The victims were allegedly given the cheques to induce them to do wiring, pipe-repair, transportation of goods and handing of house key to the two accused for rental purpose.

The offences purportedly happened at No 39, Jalan Langgak Golf Ampang Hilir and No 3, Lorong Ru Kedua, Off Jalan Ampang, Ampang Hilir here, between Sept 22 dan Oct 30, 2008.

Yoganandha dan Sumathi were also accused of cheating V. Kodivelu, 32, by giving a cheque for RM50,640 to induce the victim to hand over computers and other equipment at No 3, Lorong Ru Kedua Off Jalan Ampang, Ampang Hilir here, between Oct 14 dan 21, 2008.

Prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Allan Suman Pillai while counsel A.G. Kalidass and S. Devanandan acted for Yoganandha and Sumathi respectively.
