MRSM Terendak wins gold medal, special award in Switzerland

SEPANG: Two students and one teacher of Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Terendak in Malacca did the country proud by winning gold medals and a special award at the 43rd International Exhibition of Invention of Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland.

They were awarded for their research entitled 'High Quality of Shereco Tile: 100% from 3 Waste Products' at three-day exhibition from April 15.

They were also given a special award for Best International Invention and Outstanding Project.

The trio were, Biology teacher Wan Rohila Wan Hasan and fifth formers Muhammad Danial Zohairen and Nor Anissa Yasmin Yusri.

Wan Rohila said the project which took them a year to complete saw the invention of a tile from clam shell, recyclable bottles and coconut husk.

"This invention takes a longer time to burn compared to other materials when its set on fire and that won us the award.

"It took us a year studying and researching on materials and the right ratio to create this material," she told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) yesterday.

Student Muhammad Danial from Bukit Antarabangsa, Kuala Lumpur said he had never imagined winning the competition as more than 700 big organisations and corporate companies also participated.

"It was definitely a shocking surprise coming out as winners.

"Now I'm driven to study and research on more things to win international recognitions such as this. I believe with hardwork, everything is possible," said the seventeen-year-old whose ambition is to be a petroleum engineer.
