MIC vice-president now in MIC-RoS legal spat

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court allowed Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk M. Saravanan to intervene as a respondent in two bids to set aside Registrar of Societies’ directive for MIC to conduct fresh elections.

Senior federal counsel Alice Loke Yee Ching, who appeared for the Registrar of Societies (RoS) said judge Datuk Asmabi Mohamad today ruled that MIC deputy vice-president Saravanan has an interest in the matter.

Counsel R. Thayalan who appeared for parties challenging the RoS directive said the court did not allow MIC central working committee (CWC) member S. Ananthan to intervene as a respondent because he never appealed the disputed party election results.

On May 12, the court is set to hear an application to stay the RoS directive pending disposal of the main bid to set aside said directive.

Previously, the same court allowed two judicial review bids to challenge the RoS order on March 20.

One judicial review, filed against the RoS and its director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah, was sought by MIC strategic director A.K. Ramalingam.

The second one, which named the RoS and the Home Minister as respondents, was filed by MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel.

Former MIC secretary-general A. Prakash Rao and party vice-presidents Datuk S. Sothinathan and Datuk S. Balakrishnan were co-applicants in Palanivel's bid.

They seek a court declaration that the result of the MIC polls held at the party's 67th annual general assembly on Nov 30, 2013, was valid and enforceable.
