Senior officials kick off meeting ahead of summit

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean senior officials convened at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) here this morning to prepare the groundwork for the ASEAN Foreign Minister’s Meeting (AMM) and related meetings on Sunday.

The meetings are the Asean Senior Officials’ Preparatory Meeting (Prep-SOM); Preparatory Meeting of the ASEAN Senior Economic Officials (Prep-SEOM) and a draft declarations meeting.

In addition, the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Senior Officials’ Preparatory Meeting for the 11th BIMP-EAGA Summit would also take place from 9 am until 5 pm.

With regard to the 26th Asean Summit, other meetings that would be convened include the 22nd SEOM-European Union (EU) Consultation and the 5th Asean Coordinating Council Working Group Meeting on the ASEAN Community’s Post-2015 Vision (ACCWG).

Tonight, deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is scheduled to attend a dinner with the foreign ministers and economic ministers at a leading hotel here, as well as launch the Commemorative Coins in conjunction with Malaysia chairing the summit.

The two-day Summit on April 26-27 in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi will focus among others on the progress made towards establishing the Asean Community by end-2015 and chart the next course of action to propel the regional grouping to greater heights.

The annual summit, which gathers leaders from all the 10-member bloc, comes at an important time as Asean is working hard to realise the establishment of the long-dreamt Asean Community, to deepen and widen regional integration.

Asean comprises 10 member countries namely Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. – BERNAMA
