Police obtain court order to bar May Day rally in KK

KOTA KINABALU: Court order will be served to individuals, including event organiser, who will be participating in the May Day gathering at Padang Merdeka here.

More than 30 non-governmental organisations are expected to take part in the May 1 gathering aimed at highlighting Sabah issues such as land rights and illegal immigrants.

City police chief Assistant Commissioner M Chandra said police had obtained the court order on April 27 to ban and warn individuals listed in the order as well as members of the public against taking part in the rally.

“I have received a notice to carry out gathering from the organiser (Bersih Sabah) but it cannot be processed because the City Hall do not approve on the use of Padang Merdeka.

“However, we were informed that the rally will still go on despite the objection from City Hall,” he said, adding the gathering is illegal.

Other identified gathering areas listed in the order are Taman Chong Thien Vun, City Park, Segama Waterfront, and Dataran Bandaraya.
