Toiling to keep public toilets clean

YOUR article “Public toilet operators to see stars” (Dec 3 last year) quoted that the Petaling Jaya City Council will introduce a star rating system for public toilets under its purview.

Almost every year, the issue of the cleanliness of public toilets is raised by the public as well as leaders.

Millions of ringgit have been spent to upgrade public toilets nationwide, including in places of worship, schools, LRT stations, government buildings and markets.

I often take the train from Nilai to my hometown in Klang. Due to the long journey, I always use the public toilets in train stations. However, they are often dirty and stink.

The Malaysian attitude towards cleanliness puzzles me.

If our toilets at home can be kept clean, why can’t we keep our public toilets clean, too?

It is embarrassing to promote our country as a tourist destination when we can’t even keep public toilets clean.

We should respect public property and take care of such facilities.

As we move towards a developed nation, it is important for us to inculcate the right attitude in people and act more responsibly by taking care of public facilities.
