SEPANG : Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Customs Department seized 12.09kg of methamphetamine and marijuana worth RM2.1million in three smuggling attempts.

Two foreigners from India, aged 42 and 49 respectively, had been arrested in connection to the cases.

In the first case, the customs officers seized a parcel sent from Lagos from a courier service company in KLIA on April 23, where it contained 10 food cans, dry fishes and dry chillies.

Checks revealed that seven cans contained methamphetamine weighing 692g worth RM131,480 and three cans contained 979g of marijuana worth RM2,937 .

KLIA Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said it was the first case where marijuana was smuggled in through KLIA.

"The parcel was supposed to be sent to Klang. Numerous attempts to contact the recipient failed and that's when the customs department came in and confiscated the parcel.

"We have yet to arrest the suspect and investigation is still ongoing," he told reporters at a press conference, today.

In the second case, two Indians who arrived from Chennai were detained at the KLIA2 arrival hall on May 3 after customs detected a suspicious scanned image in their luggage.

Checks into two luggage bags from each suspect found methamphetamine hidden in a pile of clothes weighing 5.6kg and 4.82kg, respectively, worth RM1.9million.

"Both suspects claimed that they did not know each other. Investigation showed that it was their first visit to the country," said Chik Omar, adding that the suspects have been remanded for seven days.

The cases are being investigated under section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
