Ex-Esscom DG, Mohammad from Sabah, appointed sec-gen

PUTRAJAYA: Former Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) director-general Datuk Mohammad Mantek has been appointed secretary-general of the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government.

The first Malaysian from Sabah to hold the post, Mohammad, 51, received his letter of appointment effective May 27 from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak here today.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa said in a statement that Mohammad was replacing Datuk Seri Arpah Abd Razak, who is retiring.

Ali said Mohammad’s appointment was an acknowledgement by the government of the latter’s contribution to the nation.

“I am confident he could carry out his responsibilities effectively with his qualification, experience and credibility,” Ali said.

Mohammad who is from Semporna, Sabah has a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) and a Bachelor of Science (Statistics) from the University of Minnesota, United States.

He began his career in the civil service as a diplomatic and administrative officer on Dec 1, 1992. --Bernama
