32 illegal immigrants detained

ALOR STAR: The state Immigration Department rounded up 32 illegal immigrants in two separate raids, ‘Ops Belanja’ and ‘Ops Selera’ at Jalan Gangsa ,here yesterday. .

Its director Mohamad Yusri Hashim said the two-hour operation which began at 4.45pm followed a tip-off and it was led by the department's deputy director, Yusrazif Wan Yusoh.

Yusri said all the immigrants aged between 20 and 39 were detained for not having valid travel documents.

“In the first raid, the raiding party detained 30 illegal immigrants of which 22 of them are from Nepal, seven from Bangladesh and one from Pakistan. All of them worked as cleaners.

“Meanwhile, in the second raid, two men from India who were in the middle of selling drinks were picked up by the team,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

Yusri said the team also detained a 39-year-old woman to facilitate investigations for harbouring the illegal immigrants.

The case was being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1963 for entering this country illegally and the local woman was investigated under Section 56(1)(d) of the Immigration Act for harbouring the illegal immigrants.
