Build walls across Sarawak and Kalimantan border: Wan Junaidi

KUCHING: The Home Ministry will submit a proposal to the government to consider constructing barriers across the 2,000km-long Malaysia-Indonesia border between Sarawak and Kalimantan

This follows concern over cross-border security especially in the wake of the discovery of migrants’ camps and graves in Wang Kelian, Perlis which is located near the Malaysia-Thailand border.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the proposal would be submitted to the Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who is also the National Security Council chairman.

“We had a discussion over the matter recently and I plan to pass the proposal to him (Shahidan) soon,” Wan Junaidi told reporters after attending a dinner event here last night.

He was asked to comment on whether the government has plan to build border barriers between Sarawak and Kalimantan similar to the ones mooted for Malaysian-Thai border in Perlis.

Speaking on his capacity as a member of parliament in Sarawak, Wan Junaidi said border securities in the country in a compromising state since there are no proper walls to separate the border of Malaysia and its neighbouring countries.

“Our borders are easily accessible and this does not only occur in states located near the Malaysian-Thailand but the same situation can also be found in between Sarawak and Kalimantan," said Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong MP.
