Malaysia willing to host mini Asean Summit to tackle human trafficking problem

KUALA PERLIS : Malaysia is willing to host a mini Asean Summit to tackle the problem of human trafficking which is now plaguing the region.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said what is required was not just a Malaysian solution, but one involving Asean nations.

"It is not Malaysia's responsibility alone. It is a cross-border effort. We need to weed these traffickers out by taking stern action against them.

"We need to find a solution at the Asean level. It is not solely the responsibility of one country," he said in a press conference today after presenting the Anugerah Desa Sejahtera 1Malaysia in Kampung Kurong Tengar here.

‎It was reported that after two weeks of combing through some 50km stretch near the Malaysia-Thai border in Perlis, police found burial plots and migrant camps on the higher contours of Bukit Wang Burma. The hill is part of a 98km Nakawan hill range.

Police learnt about the existence of the camps where traffickers detained large groups of migrants but could not pinpoint the exact location until the recent discovery in Thailand.
