Memorial, not tourist spot for death camps in Wang Kelian

WANG KELIAN, Perlis: Upset over remarks hurled over turning the death camps into tourist spots, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said his good intentions were 'misquoted' by the media.

He said his intentions were pure and did not intend to offend anyone.

"All media have misquoted me. I am upset. I was merely suggesting that we turn into a memorial, so that they can be remembered." he said when asked to comment about the backlash from his recent 'death camp tourist spot' remark.

Last Sunday, Shahidan said migrant camps found on the hills bordering Thailand should be turned into tourist spot, so that smugglers would not dare to open camps on the hills again.

This however earned the wrath of many, saying his remarks were insensitive and untimely.
