Child safety seat to be made compulsory within 4 years: Aziz Kaprawi

PUTRAJAYA: The usage of Child Restraint Seats in vehicles will be made compulsory within the next four years, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi.

He said the time frame before the implementation was needed to spread awareness among the public on the matter apart from obtaining feedback from road users on its usage.

Aziz said the ministry was encouraging the usage of the child seats through advocacy programmes before it becomes enforced by the Road and Transport Department.

He said this has become a bigger necessity as of the 53 road accidents involving children in 2013, 13 have died.

“It may take time to promote this among the road users as it involved more cost for them, so we have to treat the issue with caution,” he told a press conference after launching the RTD’s “Child Seat Usage” campaign at the ministry headquarters, here, this afternoon.
