Two earthquakes strike Sabah within minutes

KOTA KINABALU: At least two earthquakes struck minutes apart in Sabah, rattling the nerves of many in the west coast and interior.

The Meteorological Department earlier reported the 2.25am earthquake measured 3.9 on the Richter scale located 14km northwest of Ranau and later posted on its website another one at 2.29am with a magnitude of 5.1.

Unlike previous aftershocks that followed the first earthquake on June 5, where the tremors were felt within Ranau and Kota Belud, the latest one could be felt in many districts.

According to the department the tremors were felt in the two districts as well as Kinabatangan, Tuaran, Kota Marudu, Beluran, Kudat and Keningau.

At the state capital here too, many people who felt it were sent rushing out of their homes.

Taman Kepayan resident Thomas Kuding said the tremors woke him up and it lasted at least about 15 seconds. "I just bolted out of the room and saw others too had rushed out of their houses."

Also at Universiti Malaysia Sabah many students left their dormitories after feeling the earthquake movement.

According to student Minnie Chin, she was still awake chatting with friends when they felt the tremors.

"When it started shaking we saw the cups on a table near us moving. Me and two friends woke those near us and ran out of the building," she said.
