Action against The Edge, Sarawak Report if offence committed

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry will only take action against business daily The Edge and blogsite Sarawak Report if there was culpability or offense committed in relation to their reports on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Its Deputy Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the action to be taken solely depended on the outcome of investigations by Thailand and Malaysian authorities following the arrest of an ex-PetroSaudi executive over blackmail and extortion allegations.

"People are still making allegation against the government (on 1MDB) and there is a lot of speculation in the mainstream and social media,

"But the government has no power to stop the media from what they want to say and will not censor it,"

"So any action we consider will be based on the outcome of investigations, and not assumption," he told a press conference here, this morning.

Wan Junaidi was asked why the government had taken the position that the arrested suspect had tampered with his former employer’s documents which lead to damning "revelations" on 1MBD dealings with PetroSaudi, as reported in The Edge and Sarawak Report previously.

Wan Junaidi said this was because all the documents had appeared to be sourced by the suspect, along with the logical assumption on how the scandal could have happened.
