PM briefed on anti-profiteering operations

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today received a briefing from the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives, and Consumerism Ministry on their efforts to curb profiteering.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said Najib was briefed on the matter in the hour-long visit at the ministry’s Anti-Profiteering Centre at its headquarters in Presint 2, here, this afternoon.

“The issue of prices of goods had always been the ministry’s priority as it realises that high prices can affect costs of living, especially among low-income earners.

“This is why we are continuously monitoring and enforcing the laws nationwide,” Hasan said in a statement today.

Hasan said a total of 1,773 notices were issued to traders for raising the prices of goods during phase one and two of the ministry’s Ops Catut anti-profiteering operations between Jan 15 and 28 June this year.

He added action was taken on 4,507 cases which involved seizures totalling RM822,216 and RM591,936 in compounds. This was based on 1,184,565 inspections done nationwide throughout the period.
