MIC election next month: Palanivel

KUALA LUMPUR: Embattled Datuk Seri G. Palanivel now wants the MIC election to be held next month, commencing with the branch elections.

Palanivel, who maintains he is the party president today chaired a meeting with his line-up of the party’s interim central working committee (CWC), as opposed to the one endorsed by RoS.

Six resolutions were passed, with the second resolution being on the party elections.

"The elections of the party will commence with the branch elections in July 2015.

"The nomination for the branch elections will be held on July 15 and 16, and the elections will be held from July 24 to 26.

"The branch elections will be followed by the elections for the president tentatively scheduled for September 2015," Palanivel told reporters after chairing the closed-door meeting.

He said the resolution also strongly reprimands and cautioned Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam for assuming the post of acting president.

He also claimed Datuk S. Sothinathan, as the “secretary-general” would take necessary measures to take over the MIC Headquarters from the "unlawful occupiers".

The resolution, Palanivel said also stated that MIC shall recover all assets from MIC including but not limited to AIMST, MIED, Tafe Collge, Koop Didik, Yayasan Pemulihan Social and all lands rightfully belonging to MIC.

"In this regard, a special committee will be set to look into all matters in respect of this."

Palanivel said letters would be immediately sent to all branch chairmen to remind them not to entertain any matters including requests for nominations and matters relating to elections from the group led by Subramaniam.

"We will take all the necessary actions according to the resolutions passed."

More than 600 branch chairmen and members from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor came to show their support.

After the press conference which was held in the presence of his supporters, Palanivel refused to take questions.

The MIC crisis erupted following differences in opinion between Palanivel and Subramaniam after the RoS issued a notice last Dec 5 directing the party to hold fresh elections for the three vice-presidential and 23 CWC posts.

The crisis reached its peak when RoS director-general Datuk Mohammad Razin Abdullah, in a letter dated June 25 to MIC secretary-general interim CWC for 2009, A. Sakthivel stated that Palanivel had ceased to be a member of MIC "ipso facto" as per Article 91 of the MIC constitution.

The letter stated that Subramaniam would take over Palanivel's duties as acting president.

However, on June 26 Palanivel issued a statement insisting that he was still the rightful party president.
