90pc of toll revenue goes to loan repayments, operational and maintenance cost

KUALA LUMPUR: Up to 90 per cent of toll revenue goes to loan repayments, operational and maintenance costs of the highways and not profitted by the concessionaires, the Dewan Negara was told today.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Rashid Shirlin said the big portion of the toll revenue collected is used for loan repayments to the financial institutions, operational and maintenance of the highways.

"The remainder 10 per cent of revenue goes to shareholders of the concessions," she said.

She was responding to Senator Datuk Jaspal Singh, who asked the government to provide statistics of toll concessionaires and total highways with tolls nationwide.

Rosnah said there are 30 highways nationwide operating under 23 concessionaires.

"Not all of the 23 concessionaires are recording profits since they started their operations. They have to wait for the concessions to mature before gaining profits," she said.

Rosnah said a total of RM5.4 billion was collected in toll revenue in 2013 and RM5.42 billion was collected in last year.

However, she said these amounts do not include expenses like loan repayments and operational and maintenance costs.
