Postponement of party elections is normal, says Fadilah

PUTRAJAYA: Postponement of party elections is normal and common among political parties in the country, said PBB Youth chief Datuk Fadillah Yusof.

Fadillah, who is also the Works Minister, said even PBB had in the past postponed its election due to a myriad of reasons.

He was responding to a question about Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s announcement that Umno elections would be postponed by 18 months.

Najib, who is also prime minister, had last week announced the Umno Supreme Council's decision to defer the party election to enable it to focus on serving the people and strengthening unity among the party members.

Fadilah said, as a Barisan Nasional component party, any postponement decision made was done in the best interest of the party.

“We had postponed our annual general meeting (before) as it was too close to the general elections and we were busy.

“I do not think the postponement will affect the selection of candidates for the general election because it involves two different people. It does not mean that those contesting for party elections will be made candidates for the general elections.

“I do not think this is a big deal as any postponement is done in the best interest of the party,” he told reporters at a ceremony to commemorate the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build the Pan Borneo highway, earlier today.

“I am not from the party but I am sure it was done with the best intentions. As a BN component party member, we leave this matter to Umno.

“Just like in a marriage, decisions should be made by the husband and wife instead of a third party.”
