Remains of human trafficking victims laid to rest

ALOR STAR: Another 24 remains believed to be Rohingyas, found at the detention camps at Bukit Wang Burma in Perlis two months ago, were laid to rest at the Kampung Tualang cemetery here early this morning.

State Islamic Religious Department (JAIK) director Datuk Mat Noh Dahaya said the remains, comprising 23 men and one unknown gender were buried in a grave at about 3am today.

Mat Noh said the burial was took place upon the completion of the post-mortem at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital’s forensic unit (HSB) here.

“A total of 75 remains were buried here so far in three stages and another 31 bodies will be laid to rest in two stages with 24 remains to be buried early tomorrow morning (July 6).

“Seven more bodies will be laid to rest after Hari Raya as the forensic team needs more time to identify the gender of the bodies,” he said in a press conference today.

Mat Noh added that to date, the absence of injury marks on the 75 victims indicated that none of them have died due to physical abuse by the syndicate but due to prolonged starvation.

The first burial had taken place on June 22 where 21 remains comprising 19 males and two females were buried in a one grave at about 10am.

Meanwhile, the second burial took place five days ago, where 30 remains of the immigrants comprising 28 males and two females were buried at 4am.

It was reported on May 11 that police had discovered 28 settlements and 139 burial plots believed to abandon by human trafficking syndicate in Wang Kelian, near the Malaysia-Thailand border.

The discovery was made after two weeks of thorough combing through the 50km Malaysia-Thai border in Perlis.
