Selangor records over 30,000 dengue cases, 84 deaths

PUTRAJAYA: The rising number of dengue cases in the country is worrying as Health Ministry recorded 59,365 cases and 165 deaths as of July 4.

Compared with last year, a total of 44,518 cases with 85 deaths were recorded for the same period.

Health director-general Datuk Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor continue to be the highest contributor of dengue cases with 33,958 cases, 84 of which are death cases.

This was followed by Perak (5,864 cases), Johor (4,859), Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (3,869) and Penang (8,826).

“The ministry has carried out various measures to address this issue. Among the initiatives include working with Construction Industry Development Board and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health to conduct Ops Gempur Aedes from June 8 to 16 at construction sites in Selangor.

"Based on our operations, 87 per cent of 60 sites that we inspected had become a breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes and all construction owners will soon be prosecuted in court.

"Thirty-eight construction sites had been ordered to close down for cleaning works." he said in a statement, today.

With Hari Raya Aidilfitri around the corner, the public are advised to be extra cautious as dengue cases are expected to rise during this season.
