UPDATED: Company director remanded in relation to 1MDB probe

PUTRAJAYA: The magistrate’s court here granted an order to detain a director of two construction and property development companies under remand for four days to assist investigations into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) today.

The 39-year-old director, sought by the special task force investigating 1MDB funds, was arrested around 1pm yesterday at the Immigration counter of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as he was about to leave the country.

A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) spokesman said the director will be investigated under section 17A of the MACC Act 2009 for accepting bribes.

He is understood to have been with 1MDB prior to his current employment.

Meanwhile, 1MDB in a statement today said it noted that an individual had been remanded by the magistrate’s court in connection with ongoing investigation by the taskforce.

1MDB however said the director was not from its company.

“No 1MDB employee is under remand,” it said, adding that they would reiterates their commitment to fully cooperate with all lawful authorities that are currently investigating 1MDB.
