Grilled fish seller sentenced to death for drug trafficking

GEORGE TOWN: A grilled fish seller was sentenced to death by the High Court yesterday for trafficking in 158.9gm of methamphetamine two years ago.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Nordin Hassan also sentenced Hafedz Saifol Sauri Yaacob, 30, to four years’ jail and five strokes of the rotan for possessing 3.14gm of monoacetylmorphines and 3.14 gramme of heroin.

He was alleged to have committing both the offences at a flat at Jalan Bukit Gambir here about 3pm on May 27, 2013.

Nordin, in finding Hafedz Saifol guilty, said he could not accept his claim that the flat was occupied by someone named ‘Maria” and that the drugs, which were found in the first aid kit, belonged to her.

“His failure to inform police of his claim earlier seems to indicate that it was an after thought,” he said.

Earlier in mitigation Jason Khor, counsel for Hafedz Saifol, said his client had to support his 64-year-old mother and asked for a lenient sentence.

He added the accused had been in remand for about two years and three months

Deputy Public Prosecutor Emma Syafawati Abdul Wahab prosecuted.
