Security at rehabilitation centres to be beef up: Prisons Dept DG

TAIPING: Security at all rehabilitation centres in the country will be beefed up in view of the attempt to smuggle drugs into one of the facilities in Perak.

Prisons Department director-general Datuk Seri Zulkifli Omar said the department would not allow such incidents to continue.

"We will collaborate with police in its investigations and if any of our officers are found to be involved they will be sacked," he said.

It was reported yesterday that a 34-year-old drug trafficker had been arrested for supplying drugs to a rehabilitation centre at Batu Gajah.

The trafficker was said to have packed the drugs into socks before throwing them into the centre's compound.

Zulkifli said the department would not protect any of its officers found to have run foul with the law.

Zulkifli was speaking to reporters here yesterday after witnessing the passing out of the department's 216 trainees.

On another matter, Zulkifli said the Public Services Department had agreed to fill 730 vacancies in the department.

"We will be taking in more candidates in September and year end," he said.
