UMNO Youth vice chief sues Rafizi

KUALA LUMPUR: KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO Youth vice chief Khairul Azwan Harun filed a suit against PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli over defamation on the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) property dealings in Melbourne.

Khairul, 39, filed the suit at the High Court Registry through the Messrs Raja Riza & Associates yesterday.

The documents were made available to the media this morning.

In his statement of claim, Khairul as the plaintiff said Rafizi had uttered slanderous and false statements against him in a press conference held at the latter's office at the Minda Uni Infiniti development centre in Sungai Besi on July 6.

Khairul, also said that among others, the statement made by Rafizi had questioned his alleged involvement in the purchase and business dealings of 746 Swanston Street property by a company owned by Mara Inc, Thrushcross Land Holdings Limited which experienced leakages of RM63 million.

He said the statements had been maliciously published on online portals which are accessible to users worldwide.

The vice chief also claimed that Rafizi who is also the National Oversight and Whistleblowers executive director had implied that he was corrupted and dishonest and had acted for his own financial interest.

In the lawsuit, he said that the defendant's words had tarnished his reputation besides portraying that he had abused his position as the chairman of Biosis Group Berhad and his position in the party in the business dealings.

On July 8, Khairul had sent a letter through his counsel demanding Rafizi to apologise and not to publish similar statements and to propose a compensation amount for damages to his reputation.

However, up until now he did not fulfil the plaintiff's claims.

Khairul is also seeking for an injunction to prohibit Rafizi or his any of his representatives from publishing similar defamatory statements against him.

Among others, he is asking for general, aggravated and exemplary damages.

Besides that, Khairul is seeking for an order to force the sole defendant to publish an apology in the main newspapers on his agreed terms.
