Two soldiers duped before attacked, robbed by a group of nine

KUCHING: A good deed by two soldiers to help a motorist with a stranded car ended with a tragedy when they were attacked and robbed by a group of assailants here on Thursday.

During the 11.30pm incident, the two victims attached with the Ria Camp Territorial Army Regiment here were heading back to their camp in their car when they saw a Perodua Myvi stranded near a roundabout in Jalan Padungan here.

The soldiers, both in their late 20s, stopped their car near the stranded vehicle to offer help to the motorist.

The duo, however, was unaware that they were lured into a trap when a group of between six and nine people barged towards from behind.

Some of the assailants, who were armed with an iron rod, started to hit the soldiers several times. The attack only ended when one of the assailant got hold of the victim’s car and fled the scene while the remaining suspects left the area in the Perodua Myvi.

The victims tried to retaliate but they were outnumbered when one of them became temporarily unconscious while the other soldier sustained wounds and bruises on his forehead and neck.

One of the soldier sought help from his colleague who brought the victims back to their camp.

“One of the soldiers lost several belongings placed inside his car, which included cash amounting RM1,400, identification card, driving license, a handphone, bank savings account book and his automated teller machine card,” a source said adding that victims only received outpatient treatment at a clinic for their injuries.

Sources also said the victims’ friend found his car, which was stolen during the attack, at Kuching International Airport here at 4.30am the following day.

A police spokesman, when contacted, confirmed the case and said investigation was on-going to identify and locate the suspects.
