Ex-chairman jailed 7-day, fined RM200,000 for power abuse

JOHOR BARU: A former chairman of a Felda Youth Council branch in Segamat was sentenced to seven days in prison and fined RM200,000 by the Sessions Court for abusing her power to acquire a business contract.

Khatijah Mohamad, 30, who previously chaired the Felda Moakil 2 branch of the non-governmental organisation (NGO), pleaded guilty today to the charge which was read in front of Sessions Court judge Mohamad Haldar Abdul Aziz.

She had used her status as chairman to obtain a business contract worth RM40,000 for her ex-husband's company.

She had committed the offence, which is under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act at about 1.20pm in front of the Maybank branch in Labis on Oct 3, 2012 during her tenure as the NGO's branch chairman.

MACC deputy public prosecutor Noor Fazlin Hamdan prosecuted.
