Exports stage strong growth in June

KUALA LUMPUR: Exports staged a strong rebound in June with a 5 per cent growth, marking it as the fastest in 12 months.

The International Trade and Industry Ministry said exports grew to record RM64.26 billion compared with the -6.7 per cent growth in May.

"It is an endorsement of Malaysia's status as an open trading economy and testament of the resilience of the country's trading sector amid the crisis in the Eurozone and the uncertainty in China," said MITI.

In June 2015, total trade with China expanded by 32.4 per cent to RM20.87 billion.

Trade surplus widened to RM7.98 billion from RM5.51 billion in May 2015, a significant swing from May.

Imports however decreased by 1.5 per cent to RM56.28 to RM120.54 billion.

MITI said Malaysia's export performance contracted in the first half of 2015 in line with the weak global demand and subdued commodity prices.

This trend was similar with the trade performance of regional economies, it said.

Exports in the first half of 2015 decreased by 3.1 per cent to RM368.33 billion while imports declined by 2.6 per cent to RM326.64 billion compared to the corresponding period of 2014.

Trade surplus was valued at RM41.69 billion, a decrease of 7 per cent. Malaysia's total trade decreased by 2.9 per cent to RM694.98 billion for the first six months of the year.
