Pandalela wants teammates to qualify for the next Olympics

PANDELELA Rinong wants her teammates to join her by qualifying for next year's Olympics through the Asian Diving Cup in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 4-6.

The 22-year-old booked her place in Rio de Janeiro after making the final of the women's 10m platform at the World Championships in Kazan on July 29.

The Sarawakian became Malaysia's first individual medal winner at the World Championships after finishing third.

Another Malaysian who has earned an Olympic ticket is Wendy Ng after she finished eighth in the women's 3m springboard.

“I am very happy to be the first Malaysian to qualify for the Olympics next year, and I now hope to see more of my teammates qualifying as well,” said Pandelela upon arriving at KLIA today after a holiday in London.

“We had a good number of divers at the previous Olympics (London 2012), and I think we can do it again.

“The Asian Diving Cup and the Diving World Cup (next year) will still offer qualifying spots for the Olympics. Hopefully more of our divers will be able to qualify.”

Malaysia were represented by eight divers at the last Olympics.

Malaysia will also host the FINA Diving Grand Prix on Oct 23-25.

"At the moment, I think all of us must focus on improving our mental and physical strength. "It doesn't matter whether we train at home or in China after these two tournaments. We just have to be focused and give our best all the time," Pandelela added.
