Write for benefit of future generations

I REFER to the letter, “Know where and how we started” (NST, Aug 7), by the late Sugiman Sabri.

I was shocked to read of the
death of a regular writer to this column, who joined us a couple of years ago.

He was a good writer who contributed his knowledge on various topics, including his last letter, that focused on Merdeka day.

I have been reading the New Straits Times for nearly 65 years, from the time when my late father was a monthly subscriber before World War 2.

I, too, have been writing regularly to this column after I retired in 1989 and have seen many writers come and go.

They either had passed away without the knowledge of the NST, or they had lost interest in writing, or stopped reading or writing altogether.

The late Sugiman was only 44, and yet, he had the time to write good and interesting letters.

My advice to retirees, old and young, is to read, and write stories and memories of your past experiences for the benefit of our future generations.

I have been wanting to meet and get to know all the regular writers of this column.

I hope the management of NST will arrange for us to meet over teh tarik and, at the same time, meet your editorial staff, as well as tour your facilities in Jalan Riong, Kuala Lumpur.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Allahyarham Sugiman Sabri for the loss of their beloved husband and father.

Although I do not know him personally, I feel that I have lost a friend from among a team of writers.
