MCMC orders Malaysiakini to remove two articles over false contents

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a notice to news portal, Malaysiakini to take down two articles which were found to be not true from its website.

MCMC in a statement said the article titled ‘Reports filed against Chief Sec, PSD Head’ and ‘Laporan terhadap KSN, Ketua Pengarah JPA’ were published yesterday.

“MCMC found the news in both articles to be untrue as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied its officers had lodged reports against the Chief Secretary to the Government and the Public Service director-general, under Section 48 of the MACC Act 2009,” the statement said.

In this regard, MCMC reminded news portals to be more responsible and check the accuracy of news before uploading them.

The commission also stressed that the act of sending false content via website application is an offence under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

It provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a maximum of one year’s jail or both upon conviction. – BERNAMA
