Vietnam Open GP: National shuttlers to face bigger match tomorrow

Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, dropped a game but still came good to overcome Indonesia's Irfan Fadhilah-Weni Anggraini in the first round of the Vietnam Open GP today.

The Malaysian mixed doubles, defeated Irfan-Weni 21-17, 10-21, 21-13 and are up against another Indonesian pair Praveen Jordan-Debby Susanto tomorrow.

"It was a normal match for us. Our biggest test however, is tomorrow.

"We have lost to Praveen-Debby twice, and they are the tournament's second seeds. We must get past them first," said Goh Liu Ying, who added that breaking into the world top 15 is the pair's target this year.

It was the end of the road for Tan Chee Tean-Shevon Lai Jemie, who lost 21-14, 21-8 to Thailand's qualifiers Bodin Issara-Savitree Amitrapai.

In women's doubles, Singapore Sea Games champions Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho beat Thailand's Panjarat Pransopon-Sarita Suwannakitborihan 21-12, 21-19. The Malaysians play Taiwan's Chen Hsiao Huan-Huang Meiching today.

Two other Malaysian pairs Lim Yin Loo-Lee Meng Yean and Erica Khoo-Ti WeiChyi both crashed out in the first round.

In men's doubles, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong cleared the first round following their 21-17, 21-14 win over India's Alwin Francis-Arun Vishnu.

The former BA of Malaysia (BAM) duo, will play the winner of the match between Japan's Akira Koga-Taichi Saito and Taiwan's Lin Chia Yu-Hsiao Lin Wu in the second round.

Independent pairs Jagdish Singh-Roni Tan Wee Long and Darren Isaac Devadass-Vountus Indra Mawan both lost in the first round.

Men's singles Zulfadli Zulkiffli, also failed to advance to the third round. Zulfadli lost 21-16, 21-12 to Indonesia's Anthony Ginting.
