Singapore regain cricket's Saudara Cup from Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore regained cricket's Saudara Cup with a five-wicket win over Malaysia in Skudai, Johor today, their first win in the series in eight years.

The three-day innings match was over inside two days at the Mutiara Rini Oval as Singapore ended Malaysia's five-year hold on the Saudara Cup.

Singapore resumed the second day's play on 115-6 before adding 53 runs to be 168 all out in 60 overs, an innings lead of 34.

Malaysia, who were out for 134 on Saturday, only managed 104 in their second knock, opener Anwar Arudin top scoring with 34.

Needing 71 to win, Singapore lost five wickets to be down at 48-5 but captain Chetan Suryawanshi scored 34 runs to guide the visitors to their target in 21.1 overs.

Malaysian bowlers Derek Michael Duraisingham and Shukri Rahim claimed three and two wickets respectively in Singapore's second innings, the latter finishing with match figures of 8-65.

The win was Singapore's first since 2007 and their ninth in the series which began in 1970, with Malaysia winning 13 times. The rest were drawn.

The series did not take place in 2013 when Singapore could not put up a team while the match was abandoned last year without a ball being bowled when rain lashed the Kallang Cricket Ground.
