45,000 have registered for VEP smart tags

JOHOR BARU: About 45,000 foreign-owned vehicles have registered for the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) smart tag in the last two weeks.

Johor Public Works, Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad said this figure was well below the 500,000 foreign vehicles which were expected to have registered by now in order for them to enter Johor using the radio frequency identification device (RFID) smart tag.

"We were informed that the online registration system for the RFID could not accommodate the number of registrations and that it needs to be improved.

"We also found that the information about the registration process was still lacking among the vehicle owners, and this needs to be addressed soon," said Hasni after visiting the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar customs, immigration and quarantine complex here today.

He said the registration period for foreign-owned vehicles to register for the smart tag has also been extended until October 1.
