The search to find victims continues

SABAK BERNAM: The search and rescue (SAR) operation for the victims of the ill-fated pompom boat which sank while making its way to Tanjung Balai, Indonesia early Thursday morning, resumed at Bagan Nakhoda Omar at 8.30am today.

Sabak and Sungai Besar Fire and Rescue Department station chiefs led a team of 14 firemen to search for survivors and bodies in Sabak Bernam and Sungai Besar waters until the boundary of Perak waters.

Other agencies involved are marine police (two boats deployed), and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (four boats), while Sekinchan, Tanjung Karang and Kuala Selangor Fire and Rescue Departments are on standby to lend assistance when needed.

So far, 20 people were rescued and 24 bodies were found.

According to survivors' account, the 40-feet long Indonesian registered boat meant to carry between 10 and 15 passengers was carrying up to 80 people.
