Unfair for Najib to step down unless he is proven guilty: Rahman Dahlan

KUALA LUMPUR: It is unfair for certain quarters to make a call urging for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to step down as the ongoing RM2.6 billion fund probe on him has yet to be concluded.

The Barisan Nasional strategic communications director, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the public should respect the premier, who personally made a request for the investigation to be carried out, which was an act of openness and transparency.

“I don’t think the prime minister should succumb to the pressure ... we have to wait until the investigation is over, and remember the fact that he also had asked for an investigation,” he told a press conference during his visit to Wangsa Sari People’s Housing Project (PPR), here today.

Abdul Rahman, who is also the Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, lashed out at instigators who would hurl new allegations after their previous accusations were found untrue.

“People forget that the original allegation by WSJ (Wall Street Journal) was the RM2.6 billion fund was from 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad), hence the people’s money. But even when the prime minister denied and MACC subsequently said it wasn’t from 1MDB, the accusers never apologise, yet they moved on and threw new allegations,” he said.

Abdul Rahman also ruled out a vote of no confidence attempt against the premier saying Najib would not be jeopardised by the attempt.

“I don’t think the vote of no confidence will even arise...but should there be one, we believe the prime minister will be able to survive confidently,” he said, adding that the support of members of parliament from Sabah and Sarawak remained solid behind the premier.

On the termination rumours of UMNO deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and vice president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal for going against the party leadership, Abdul Rahman said the situation would hurt the party more.

“In my heart, I do not think it will happen ... I was not called to discuss (the matter). But, personally, I do not think that it will be a wise move,” said the minister.
