KUALA LUMPUR: Police have smashed a local drug syndicate which have been active for only a week seizing over RM2 million worth of ganja with the arrest of three men.

The suspects who are in their 30's were believed to have smuggled the drugs from several neighbouring countries but police are still investigating where it actually came from.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said their unlawful activity was unfolded through two raids launched on Oct 4 following extensive surveillance on the syndicate’s activities.

"The raids were conducted by the Bukit Aman’s narcotics department and the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) in Kuala Selangor and Kuala Lumpur from 8.30am to 11am yesterday and arrested the three," he said.

Police found 469kg drugs believed to be ganja packed into individual packets inside three cars believed to be carrying the drugs.

"We have stopped and searched three Toyota luxury cars and recovered 250 packets of drugs inside an Estima and a gunny bag with drugs and equipment to stash the drugs inside the Alphard," he said at the Bukit Aman police headquarters today.

The street value of the drugs was estimated to be around RM2 million, Mokhtar added.

"The drugs were believed to be for local consumption around Selangor and KL," he told a press conference today.

He said police also confiscated cash worth RM1,300 and equipment to stash the drugs into individual packets.
