Sibu Immigration nabs 17 illegal immigrants

SIBU: Seventeen Indonesian nationals were detained by the Sibu Immigration Department for entering and staying in the country illegally.

The foreigners, aged between 20 and 40, were rounded up by the department during a raid on a kongsi in Jalan Kampung Datuk Baru here early today.

They were among 20 foreigners inspected during the 1.15 am operation, also dubbed as Op Ikrar (Sapu), led by the department’s deputy director Raffian Mohammad Alias.

A department spokesperson said checks showed 16 foreigners failed to provide any valid travelling documents and working permits, which lead to their arrest.

“Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man was detained for overstaying in the country,” said the spokesman.

All illegal immigrants have been placed at the department’s Sungai Merah lock-up to facilitate investigation into the case.
