Langkawi schools to close, others to reopen tomorrow

PUTRAJAYA: All 28 schools in Langkawi have been ordered to close tomorrow due to the unhealthy Air Pollutant Index reading on the island.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the closure of these schools would involve 17,759 students.

He said the Kedah Education Department and the Langkawi education district office had been tasked with informing parents on the school closure order.

"Other schools nationwide will reopen tomorrow (Wednesday).

"However, all state education departments, education district offices and schools must constantly keep track of the API readings," he told reporters after chairing a meeting with state education excos today.

Should the API readings rise to the unhealthy or hazardous levels, Mahdzir said the relevant authorities in respective levels could take the necessary actions as what had been decided by the ministry.
