BESUT: A mentally-unsound man, who had gone amok at his home in Kampung Gong Resam in Hulu Besut, here, died after a scuffle with the police yesterday.
The 40-year-old man had also repeatedly stabbed a policeman in the back with a screwdriver when they tried to subdue him.
District police chief Superintendent Khalid Che Lah said police had received a call from the man’s relative, who claimed that he had turned aggressive at home and could not be controlled by other family members.
“Three policemen were sent to the scene. However, upon spotting the policemen, the man ran into his house to hide.
“When our men entered the house, a commotion broke out. In the course of trying to subdue him, the man stabbed one of the policemen three times with a screwdriver in his back.
“The victim also sustained injuries on his forehead,” said Khalid.
Following the incident, the man was sent to the Besut Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Khalid said a post mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.
