WASHINGTON DC: Kuala Lumpur will soon establish a Regional Digital Counter-Messaging Communications Centre to fight the spread of Islamic State (IS) ideology and propaganda through the internet.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said details of the planned move were being finalised with the United States.
He said US Secretary of State John Kerry had informed him Washington was keen to see the centre established as soon as possible to counter spread of IS propaganda among internet-savvy Muslims.
Zahid was speaking to the Malaysian media after signing the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 6 (HSPD-6) on Thursday.
The signing of the HSPD-6 is a pre-requisite for Malaysia to be accepted into the US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) which would enable visa free travel for Malaysians to the US.
Malaysia is the 39th country to ink the HSPD-6 document with the US.
Other Asean countries which have also done so include Singapore and Brunei.
