Kamalanathan will not contest for MICs deputy president

SHAH ALAM: MIC leader P. Kamalanathan has assured that he would not be contesting for the party's deputy president post in the upcoming election in November.

He said he would make way for the post to be contested by Datuk M. Saravanan, who is currently the party's vice president.

" Saravanan had offered himself for the post and Health Minister (and MIC president Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam) won uncontested.

" I feel that when the chance to contest for the post has been taken by someone who has a government position, I should not vie for it too.

" Saravanan has the advantage and the ability to be the deputy president. I still have time as I am not that old (to contest in the future)," said Kamalanathan.

Kamalanathan, who is also deputy education minister, said he would be contesting in the party election but declined to reveal more.

" I will announce it soon. Most importantly, I will make a decision that would certainly benefit MIC and Barisan Nasional," said Kamalanathan.

Kamalanathan also agreed with Subramaniam who had on Thursday said he was not endorsing any candidates in the coming party election.

" It is a fair statement because everyone is his supporter. I am also impressed that he is coming down hard on money politics. I thank him for taking a strong stand and I hope that will be practiced by all candidates irrespective of the positions they are contesting for," said Kamalanathan.
