Govt to establish primary unit to manage volunteers, supplies for floods

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today announced the creation of primary unit tasked with managing volunteers and relief supplies for the upcoming flood season.

He said, based on past experience, there were instances where aid was concentrated on only one area, despite there being other areas in need of assistance.

“Every year-end, several locations in the country will be hit by floods. As such, this year, the government has adopted several early measures to face the coming floods,” he said in an audio address via his blog www.najibrazak.com, today.

Najib said beginning this month, the government will begin its preparations, particularly on logistical aspects such as communication, evacuation of settlements, food storage, medical personnel management and clearing works.

He also commended the continuous efforts of Malaysians who have not only served as volunteer, but also contributed aid supplies.

“As such, this year, we will set up a primary unit which will coordinate these volunteers as well as the supplies to ensure that they reach flood victims effectively.

“God willing, with these efforts, we will be more prepared to handle any possibilities the floods may bring this year.”
