Almost 400,000 new voters since 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission has received 373,467 new voter registrations since May 2013 until first quarter of this year.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, said various efforts have been made to encourage people to become registered voters, including setting up counters at shopping malls and higher education institutes.

"We are aggressively conducting our outreach programme through our mobile counters nationwide," she said during a question-and-answer session in Dewan Rakyat today.

Azalina said registration could also be done at the EC headquarters, state Land Office in Putrajaya and numerous post offices.

Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh) had asked the Prime Minister to state the number of new voters registered with the EC in every state since May 2013.

Kok also asked whether non-governmental organisations are allowed to become assistant registrars to register new voters. This, she claimed, was because, Seputeh's branch was allowed to register new voters.

Kok also claimed that many had visited her office to register as voters.

Azalina said there are 49 Assistant Registrars nationwide with two from DAP in Kuala Lumpur and 46 in Sarawak.

She said the breakdown of new voters according to states will be given in a written reply.
