Chong Wei can win gold at Olympics, says ex-World No. 1

KUALA LUMPUR: Former world number one, Lee Hyun-il of South Korea feels age would not be a barrier for Datuk Lee Chong Wei to win the gold medal at the Olympics.

“Age is not a problem... Chong Wei can win gold medal,” said the 35-year-old Hyun-Il.

Hyun-il, the current world number 15, noted that it was a good sign for Chong Wei to have a win after serving an eight-month doping suspension by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

“Now he is back playing in tournaments... it is also a very good sign that he can still win,” Hyun-il said when commenting on Chong Wei’s win at the French Open last Sunday.

Hyun-il was met after attending the signing ceremony of cooperation between the Muar City Badminton Club and Tokio Marine Insurance Group today.

Chong Wei, 33, the former world number one and current number 19, clinched his third French International title after defeating Taiwan’s Chou Tien Chen.

Chong Wei had also won the title in 2007 and 2011.--BERNAMA
