Najib welcomes heads of state to 27th Asean Summit

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak took to Facebook to welcome heads of state to the 27th Asean Summit and related summits.

“Selamat Datang to all heads of state and government to the Asean Summit and related summits.”

“This evening I met (US) President Barack Obama, where we discussed bilateral issues to further strengthen the ties between our two nations,” posted Najib on his Facebook.

Leaders from Asean and eight other nations with close ties with the bloc have gathered in the city for the summits ending on Sunday. They are to raise issues related to security, environment and trade.

The nations include US, Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia and South Korea.

Obama will be attending the 3rd Asean-US Summit, 10th East Asia Summit over the next two days and he will also address the Asean Business and Investment Summit on Saturday.

He attended a town-hall session at the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Summit on Friday which gathered some 500 young leaders from 10 Asean nations.

This is Obama’s second visit to Malaysia, his first was in 2014.

Obama is the second US President to visit Malaysia twice. The first was Lyndon B. Johnson in the 60s.
