India chasing world class infrastructure dream, eager to work with Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: India is chasing a world class infrastructure dream and is eager to work with Malaysia and the rest of Asean to realise it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

He hopes the country's second wave of structural and financial reforms and openness of the economy and the removal of bottlenecks will further boost investments and make it the easiest place to do business.

While the requirement for road, rail and waterways was enormous, he said, India had also decided to go for renewable energy in a big way.

"We are at a take-off stage. I invite you to come and see the winds of change in India," he said, during the Asean Business and Investment Summit.

"When you come, you will get the wings of a new business environment."

Describing Asean as one of the largest economic powerhouses in the world, he praised the region for having done miracles for even simple things like tourism.

"In the Asian miracle, it shows that growth depends more on the spirit of people rather than the size of the population," he said.

Modi, who took office nearly 18 months ago, said the Indian economy faced challenges and undertook reforms to transform.

"Reform is just a way station on the long journey to (a) destination – which is the transformation of India," he said.

Modi said that India now boasts of stronger growth, lower inflation, stronger investments, and shrinking current account deficits while tax revenues are up and interest rates lower.

“More needs to be done in India even though the Soil Health Card ( a programme initiated by the Indian Government to improve soil health and reduce the input costs for farmers), housing programmes and improvements in the transport sector have been undertaken,” he said.

The government has also embarked on financial inclusiveness by getting the people to open bank accounts, he added.
