AmGeneral Insurance eyes takaful business

KUALA LUMPUR: AmBank Group is open to expanding its AmGeneral Insurance business to include the takaful component.

With such a move, takaful would complement AmBank's general insurance business by bringing in clients who prefer shariah-compliant products.

"It is something in the future that is a possibility. We have an open mind about it," said AmBank Group Chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim.

He was speaking to the media after launching AmGeneral Insurance Berhad's new office here today where he was asked if AmGeneral was looking into the possibility of obtaining a takaful license for its general insurance business.

Earlier at the event, Azman also witnessed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia where the insurer agreed to sponsor four actuarial science final year students from UKM's School of Mathematical Sciences under its internship programme.

AmGeneral chief executive officer Derek Roberts signed the MoU with UKM's Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali.
