KUALA LUMPUR: The much publicised doping abuse by international athletes, especially from Russia, will be a hot topic when the sports brains meet at the 1st Asean Sports Medicine Conference 2015.
Come Nov 28, orthopaedic surgeons, sports physicians, physiotherapists, sports science practitioners, trainers, coaches and health professional from the world over will converge at the Four Points by Sheraton Puchong, Selangor for the two-day event.
Themed ‘Enhancing Performance Through Sports Medicine & Sports Science’, the conference will also pay attention to doping which has cause serious concerns in the world arena, recently.
The International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) suspended the Russian Athletics Federation on Nov 13 following allegations of widespread and state-sponsored doping.
Russia has since announced a three-month road map to clean up its act, with the nation's Olympic Committee leading efforts to ensure honest athletes can compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
Conference organising chairman, Associate Professor Major (Dr) Abdul Halim Mokhtar, said topics to be discussed include injury prevention, recovery and management from both aspects of sports medicine and sports science.
“Areas to be covered are sports physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, medical treatment and rehabilitation,” said Halim, who is a lecturer-cum-consultant sports physician with University Malaya and Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine vice-president.
He added that they aimed to steer the conference towards updating participants with the latest information and techniques, as well as how these could be applied to enhance performance in sports.
“Participants can look forward to thought-provoking keynote lectures and sessions as well as pick up new developments from the free paper oral and poster presentations.
“Several practical pre-conference workshops on various topics, like ultrasound and taping, will be held as they are of important relevance in our daily practice,” said Halim.
This conference coincides with Malaysia assuming the Asean chairmanship.
“This conference brings together the sports science professionals and students with a common link of managing a multitude of conditions related to sports.
“It will bring together a variety of exciting topics towards this goal. This will allow the implementation of current research and state-of-the-art understanding in sports science to be put into practice and also the current treatment of sports injury.
“There will be presentations of these topics by experts in their field from Asean countries and beyond,” said Halim, adding there would be plenty of networking opportunities with professionals from various fields.
